Compassion Group with Robert Lupton

We are excited to announce that consultant Dr. Robert Lupton, author of “Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help (And How to Reverse It),” has agreed to work directly with a group of up to 22 Kern Pastors from Sept. 2013 – May 2014. This Compassion Group will meet five times using the Foundation’s video conferencing vendor, BlueJeans. No special software or technical expertise is required; joining the meeting is as simple as clicking on a link emailed to you in advance. Pastors can participate in the calls from anywhere using any Internet-capable device with a camera (desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone).

Some Kern Pastors will be invited to make presentations to the group. In these presentations, pastors will be asked to share what they are learning, pose questions to explore, and/or present a case study to promote group learning. Pastors will have up to 30 minutes of private consulting time with Lupton when refining their presentations.

If the number of applicants exceeds 22, not all applications will be approved. Successful applicants will receive a free copy of Toxic Charity and ample notice of each video conference session. Persistent absentees will be dropped from the group. A capstone experience, determined by Foundation staff with input from Lupton and the group, may be offered during the summer of 2014 to all pastors who fulfill their commitments to the Compassion Group. Additionally, Kern Pastors whose churches are interested in developing grant proposals will be offered assistance and encouragement by Foundation staff. Kern Pastors with questions about the Compassion Group may contact program director Fred Oaks ( This email address is being protected from spambots. Registration for Compassion Group closed Sept. 6, 2013. If you missed the deadline but would like to fill one of the three available spaces, please email Fred Oaks ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ). Our first call is set for Sept. 26.
